About the game

Tune Tussle is a cartoon rhythm sing-off. Pip, a little blue songbird with a big voice, joins a singing tour and meets five rivals: Bramble the hedgehog, Tess the alley cat, Captain Bellow the walrus, DJ Waddle the penguin and Madame Hoot the owl. Your rival sings a short tune first, then it is your turn: four lanes of arrows scroll to their outlines and you hit each one on the beat to sing the tune back. Every hit plays Pip's voice on the right note, long notes are held, and a tug-of-war bar shows who is winning.

The tour has a warm-up and five weeks with three songs each, 16 original songs composed right in your browser, from gentle garden pop to swing on the rooftops and fast beats on a snowy peak, up to a grand opera on the Moon. Pick Easy, Normal or Hard, collect up to three stars per song for accuracy, win crowns on Hard and unlock six note styles. Timing can be tuned with a quick tap test, and the game plays with the keyboard, the mouse or touch.

How to play

  • Listen while your rival sings, then sing the tune back when the banner says it is your turn.
  • Press each arrow when it reaches its outline: ← ↓ ↑ → or D F J K. On a phone or tablet, tap the four columns of the screen (left to right).
  • Long notes have a tail: keep holding until it ends.
  • Hits push the bar towards you, misses push it towards your rival. If the bar runs out, the song stops and you can try again, also on Easy.
  • Win a song to open the next one. Stars come from accuracy, a win on Hard earns a crown. Esc or P pauses.

Tips and tricks

  • Watch your rival's arrows: your turn repeats the same tune, so you already know what is coming.
  • Look at the outlines, not at the arrows far away. Press when an arrow covers its outline.
  • Higher notes of the melody go to the right lanes and lower notes to the left ones, so the arrows follow the tune.
  • For long notes, press on the head and keep holding until the tail is gone. Letting go early breaks your combo.
  • If the arrows feel a little early or late, open Settings and use the timing test: tap along to the clicks and the game sets the offset for you.
  • Too fast? Lower the arrow speed in Settings, or play the song on Easy first. Easy keeps only the notes on the main beats.
  • On a phone, rest one finger of each hand near the bottom and tap the four columns; in portrait the arrows fall towards your thumbs.
