About the game

Letterloons is a friendly word guessing game in the sky. A little pilot floats in a wicker basket under six colourful balloons, and you guess the hidden word one letter at a time. Every right letter lifts the balloon higher, every wrong one pops a balloon. Find the word before the last balloon pops, and if it does, the pilot simply floats down under an umbrella.

Fly across 8 themed lands with 6 levels each: Animals, Food, At Home, Nature, Transport, Sports, Jobs and Countries. Each level is a flight of 2 to 4 words, and fewer mistakes mean more stars. Collect coins for hints, unlock six cute pilots and new balloon colours, chase your best streak in Quick Play, solve the Daily Word, or play 2 Players on one device where one of you types a secret word. Every language has its own word lists and its own alphabet, from Romanian ș and ț to Turkish ğ and İ and German ä, ö, ü and ß.

How to play

  • Tap a letter on the on-screen keyboard, or type it on your keyboard, to guess a letter of the hidden word.
  • Right letters appear in the word; every wrong letter pops one of your 6 balloons.
  • Find the whole word before all the balloons pop. The theme of the word is shown at the top.
  • Stuck? Letter (25 coins) shows one letter; Gust (15 coins) blows away 3 wrong letters. Keys 1 and 2 use them too.
  • Finish every word of a level to win up to 3 stars: the fewer mistakes, the more stars.
  • In 2 Players, one player types a secret word and picks a theme hint, then passes the device to the other.

Tips and tricks

  • Start with the vowels. Most words have at least one A, E, I or O, and a right vowel often shows the shape of the whole word.
  • Look at the theme at the top of the screen. Knowing the word is an animal or a country cuts down the possibilities a lot.
  • Short words are the trickiest, because few letters are revealed and many words fit. Take your time with them.
  • Use Gust before Letter when you still have many keys left: for 15 coins it removes 3 letters that are not in the word.
  • Keep your mistakes low for stars: 3 stars need at most 1.5 wrong letters per word on average, 2 stars at most 3.
  • If the last balloon pops, Keep flying gives you 3 new balloons for coins, but in Adventure that level can then earn only 1 star.
  • Play the Daily Word every day: it pays 30 coins and grows your day streak.

Frequently asked questions

Is Letterloons free?

Yes. Letterloons is free to play in your browser on computers, tablets and phones, with no download.

What happens when all the balloons pop?

Nothing scary: your pilot opens an umbrella and floats down softly. You see the word, and you can try again or buy 3 more balloons with coins to keep flying.

How do I open new lands?

Finish 4 of the 6 levels in a land and the next land opens. Levels inside a land open one after another.

Can two people play together?

Yes. In 2 Players one player types a secret word on the screen keyboard and may choose a theme as a hint, then the other guesses it. You take turns and score points.

Are accents and special letters used?

Yes. Each language uses its own alphabet. In Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese a base letter also reveals its accented forms, while letters like Ñ, Ș, Ț, Ğ, İ, Ä and ß have their own keys.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Stars, coins, pilots, balloon colours, your best streak and the daily streak are saved in your browser on this device.
