About the game

Glowbug Words is a cozy word search puzzle under a starry sky. Swipe across the glowing letters to catch the hidden words, and every word you find flies into Lumi the firefly’s jar as a little light. Words hide across, down, diagonally and, in the bigger grids, even backwards, so keep your eyes sharp!

Explore 16 themes with 6 levels each, from Animal Friends and Fruit Basket to Under the Sea and Starry Space. Grids grow from a tiny 6×6 to a giant 11×11 as you play. Win up to three stars per level, collect glow drops for hints and new glow colors, and come back every day for a fresh daily puzzle in three sizes. The words are chosen for each language, so every grid feels natural in English, Romanian, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Portuguese and Turkish.

How to play

  • Swipe across the letters of a word in a straight line, or tap the first letter and then the last one.
  • Words can go across, down, diagonally and, later, backwards.
  • Find every word in the list before the lantern goes dark; the faster you are, the more stars you win.
  • Use a hint to light up the first letter of a word (tap again to see it all). Hints cost glow drops.
  • Finish levels to open new themes; play the daily puzzle and free play for extra glow drops.
  • Keyboard: arrows to move, Space or Enter to pick letters, H for a hint, P to pause.

Tips and tricks

  • Scan for the rarest letters first. A word with a K, Z or Q is much easier to spot than one made of common letters like E and A.
  • Read the grid in the directions this level allows: small grids use only across and down, then diagonals arrive, and from the 9×9 grids words can also run backwards.
  • Keep your eye on the first letter of a word, then check all eight neighbours for the second letter before following the line.
  • Speed matters for stars: you get 3 stars with at least half of the time left, and using two or more hints limits the level to 2 stars.
  • Glow drops are worth saving. A hint costs 15 drops and lights up the first letter; tapping it again for the whole word costs another 15.
  • Play the Daily puzzle every day: its three sizes pay the biggest rewards (25, 40 and 60 glow drops) and keep your streak going.
  • If the clock stresses you, switch on Relaxed mode in Settings. There is no timer, and stars depend only on how many hints you use.

Frequently asked questions

Is Glowbug Words free?

Yes. Glowbug Words is a free word search game you play online in your browser, with no download and no account needed.

Can I play it on my phone?

Yes. It works on phones, tablets and computers in portrait or landscape. Swipe across the letters, or tap the first letter and then the last one.

How do I open new themes?

Finish 4 of the 6 levels in a theme and the next theme opens. There are 16 themes in all, so 96 levels.

What happens when the lantern goes dark?

Time is up and you can try again, or add 30 more seconds for 20 glow drops and keep searching.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your stars, opened themes, glow drops, colors and daily streak are saved in the browser on the device you play on.

Are the puzzles the same in every language?

No. Each language has its own word lists for every theme, so a German grid uses German words and an English grid uses English words.
